People don’t hate snakes because they’re ugly (which, of course, is in the eye of the beholder). Not all snakes are dangerous to humans, but many are, and part of the reason they elicit a panicked response is that we usually don’t see them until it’s too late (their movement also seems unnatural). Chimps (like humans) are naturally inquisitive about new things, but chimps raised in captivity who have never seen a snake instinctively recoil from them on first exposure. Our aversion is rooted in millions of years of evolution.
