For younger people, it used to be you could largely only watch television through a moderately large device connected to mains power (although smaller battery powered examples existed even then).

This isn’t quite as “stoopid” as it sounds. For one thing, as some idiot (☺) pointed out, the broadcast could be being watched on a battery-powered TV, or, the power hasn’t yet gone out, and the number could be written down, in case it does…

Speaking of storms. Years ago driving down the Garden State Pkwy in NJ and it is raining so hard, I can’t see the end of the hood on my Civic!! People doing 80MPH. I had to pull over into a rest area. It finally slowed down and I went on my way seeing all kinds of flooding. In the meantime the DJ is saying how it is sunny and nice out!!! Finally, he says, “Stop Calling, I know what it is doing, but if I don’t read the weather report as written, I might get fired!!”

For humor’s sake I want to consider the reporter to be stoopid!

Phones don’t always work during a power outage, especially old-fashioned land lines.

This is why the Power Company should be one of the contacts on your cell. It is the only one on mine that normally lives in my car—for emergencies!

Landlines phones use a separate power source and thus could still be working.

I’ll point out that this could be useful for those who lose power later in the storm.
