Add to this a tight budget.

If you can afford to buy, then spread your dollars. Capitalism, with controls and a little Socialism thrown in, works. (unchecked Capitalism, doesn’t).

I hate receiving gifts in general, just because I’m the kind of person who goes ahead and buys something if I really want it (unless it’s too expensive, of course). Plus I have pretty limited tastes in general. So if somebody gives me a present, there’s a really good chance that either I already have it, or else I don’t want it. Either way I just wind up feeling guilty. Not exactly the joy they were attempting to spread.

I would feel better about buying things if they were made in America

For some 25 years I have “bought” local non-profits for family and friends. A local church sponsors a Christmas Fair with 35 or so groups where you can make donations in the names of your list. You get a card from each that you donate to that you then can give to your listee. No person that I know needs more stuff to store in a closet or attic.
