    I can remember when players did not throw balls to the crowd. If I remember correctly they would be fined the price of the ball. Most players when I was young did not make enough to absorb the cost so they did not do it. Now of course just about every ball fouled or caught in the outfield for the third out ends up in the stands.

    According to the Pro Football Network, throwing a football into the stands does incur a fine. However, just giving a ball to a fan does not.
