Our family is odd. We like one another, but we simply do not communicate with each other. Some of us have gone years without talking to each other.
Then about 5 years ago, I called my sister and my cousin out of the blue. Since then, it has become a weekly practice. The three of us are the sole survivors of my father’s side of the family. They really enjoy the calls although we rarely have any news to tell. It’s funny how the phone only works in one direction but what the heck.
I’ve also reached out to some old friends. This is odd since I am an introvert who hates to use the phone.
Reach out to old friends and relatives. You just might make their day.
My mom was mentally ill all her life so I can’t imagine, but I had a wonderful MIL, been gone 37 years now, I still miss her. I took care of her the last three years of her life when she was bedridden with cancer.
My calls occur only in my dreams now. Mom passed just over 15 years ago. Now once I wake from these dreams I feel as if I have visited with her for an afternoon and I feel better. Dad passed in the summer of 2020 and he generally joins us now. It feels good to “be” with them, even if it is only in a dream.
I lost my mom to cancer in 1994. She was 68. Several years back, I found an old cassette tape I had made when I was around 9 or 10. In the car, my mom was reading Charlotte’s Web into the tape recorder. She came across a word and just started laughing to the point of tears. I’m 63 now. I was able to convert the tape to an MP3. It warms my heart to hear my mom’s voice and her laughter.
My mother would have been 99 today. She died nearly four years ago. I was 62, and grateful that she lived such a long life and that I had her for so many years. I miss not being able to talk to her, but I have the memories.
I took care of my mom for her last few years. It is not the same as having a conversation with her but my mom as a piano teacher had a few DVDs of her and her students and I have 2 DVDs of her playing by herself – tributes to her favorite composers. She talks about each composer then plays one or two compositions. As close as it’s going to get:)

Well, I had 70 years with her, so I can’t complain.

This doesn’t apply to me, you’re fortunate that you can say that Aunty. It’s my dad’s voice I’d rather remember.

No matter how old we get if our other is still alive we’ll always be their child.

Over the years, my mother’s name changed from Ma-Ma, to Mommy, to Mom, to Ma.
