“Everybody can’t take their presents back to the North Pole. The mall is the clearing house for the presents and they get them back to Santa so he can find someone who wants it.”
I was under the impression that Santa makes ‘toys’ in his shop. Not socks and ugly Christmas sweaters. Those socks and sweaters you CAN return back to the mall.
Because it’s like buying something from Amazon – you just take it to the nearest Staples or Trader Joe’s – it’s a pickup distribution point. You can’t have a long-standing distribution system like Santa’s without knowing what you’re doing.
IF Brutus is thinking quickly today, he can say, “Because, son, just like Amazon, Santa has return locations set up in many different places, just to make the returns easier.”
Of course, then he has to deal wiith the next question: “But dad, if Santa knows so much about us — all that naughty and nice stuff — why do we have to return things? Why doesn’t he always deliver the perfect gift?”
Santa is getting me a new car that I have to pay for. A relative is getting me a discount. My current car is nice, but my lease is running out, so I hope I can turn it in a few months early. Otherwise I have to put air in the tires. (Sort of a joke, but the tires are a bit low.)
The mall has a way to contact Santa and let him know when they have items people have returned. He then goes to the malls across the world and picks them up. That process takes awhile.

The mall collects the returned gifts and forwards them to the North Pole after New Year’s when the elves return from holiday.

Santa only does the stockings, not the gifts to each other.

Santa is like Amazon and has return counters at several department stores and Whole Foods.

Some of the things broke. That’s what happened to my Creepy Crawlers oven. It broke before I even got to use it.
