I feed my Bassets twice a day. Prevents stomach torsion. Large dogs are prone to it, and because of their weight, Bassets are considered large dogs. They manage but from the pleading eyes, the begging, and the other antics, you’d think food was a distant memory. I keep them trim but I don’t starve them. Fred, you could manage just fine.
If Fred puts on weight, the vet would call him “sturdy” again and Fred would throw idignant glances and think: “I beg your pardon?” Then he would need to go on a diet and complain all the time, howl in the middle of the night which would cause the Dears to wake up startled and come down to the kitchen, asking: “Fred, what is it?!” and Fred would think: “I am famish” Then he would get some food- or would be rummaging through the kitchen cupboards. He would put on weight and the vet would call him “sturdy chap”…
My Lizzie is fed twice a day. I cook her food which includes ground turkey and veggies with proper supplements. She loves her sugar snap peas for a lunch time snack! And, yes, she is also spoiled!

every dog I’ve had has had one meal a day apart from one who had pups; she got two meals and snacks and still got thin till they were weaned.
