A few decades ago a man bought a tank of helium and inflated a few dozen balloons tied to his lawn chair. When it was lifting him he cut his anchor rope and took off. He took along a bb gun to pop some balloons if he went too high, but he dropped the gun. Some airline pilots reported him at over 10,000 feet, and he drifted over a hundred miles before he came down. I suspect those pilots who reported him had to take a drug test before they were allowed to fly again. True story, and hit the national news.
