Just a word in passing, the erratic update problems are most likely due to people working juju in the background. The absorption of comics.com should be complete by the first part of June, and there’s a lot of work that needs to be done to accomplish that. I have noticed, for example, that embedded links and pictures no longer work. Bold text still does, but italics do not. On the other hand, the time it takes for a comment to post has gone from 20 seconds or so to instantaneous. I’m sure things will settle down soon.Today’s lovely strip made me think of this: http://home.comcast.net/~ccdesan/DogsSmall.jpg
Super blog posts today. Re the Reminiscence Bump, I have watched that with some interest as my mother has progressed in her various stages of dementia. Now 94 and living in an assisted living facility, a couple of months ago she started saying about half of everything in French, which she had studied in college. Good thing there’s a 99-year-old resident who also speaks French, they spend a lot of time chatting.
The hardtack recipe reminded me of this, which is considerably more tasty:Lembas (by “Elven Maiden”)6 Tbsp butter or margarine, slightly softened 2 C self-rising flour 1 Tbsp granulated sugar ½ cup raisins (optional) 1 egg, well beaten ½ C milk 4 Tbsp heavy cream Mallorn leaves
With a pastry blender of fork, cut margarine into the flour in a mixing bowl until the mixture resembles cornmeal. Do this rapidly so the butter does not melt. Add the sugar and if desired, ½ cup of raisins. In a small bowl, beat the egg and milk together until mixed. Reserve 1 TBSP of this mixture to brush the tops of the Lembas. Add the cream and egg mixture to the flour and mix just until combined into a stiff, soft dough. Knead three or four times on a lightly floured surface. Roll dough to a ¾" thickness and cut with an oval or leaf shaped cookie cutter. Place on a lightly greased baking sheet, leaving 1" of space between Lembas. Brush the tops of the Lembas with the reserved egg-milk mixture. Bake for 12 -13 minutes in a preheated 400 degree oven. For safe keeping, wrap each Lembas individually in a fresh, clean Mallorn leaf. If these leaves are unavailable in your area, store the Lembas in a tightly closed container. Makes about 1½ dozen Lembas.
Reminds me of a National Lampoon cover with this quote from W.R. Hearst: “Give me a magazine cover with a beautiful girl, a dog or a baby on it, and I’ll give you a magazine that sells,” over a picture of a beautiful girl serving a roasted dog (with an apple in its mouth) to a baby.
I saw this for the first time in my brother’s dorm room 34 years ago, and for the second time a few seconds ago, here: http://lampoon.rwinters.com/Lampoon1977.htm. Though I’ve thought of it many times in the intervening years.
Had not noticed the info about Hi-Res Zoom. But then again, I do not really pay much attention to all the self-promotion that GoComics indulges in.
I have not figured out whether I like the new commenting structure or not. The “Reply” button is nice, I suppose, but I would prefer that GoComics recognized HTML code. I have not gotten the hang of how to use the Pibgorn markups
Frog Blog is down today. It’s in read-only mode, so I can’t add anything new. http://status.blogger.com/If you care to drop by, kindly notice that all of my posts are mysteriously posted by “x” now. I’m guessing that either Mother Thalweg or Yiayia http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXfpPXlPatMhijacked my account. What next?
Another innovation! Now GoComics no longer tells you what did not load at the top of my comics page! I also note they no longer label paid subscribers as “Genius.” Two for the price of one today!

There’s no such thing as a bad dog as long as there’s a painting in it. Re the Blog: I notice Ella had to remain in the back of the bus.

But “Dogs Playing Poker” comes close.

’Dogs playing Poker" is nicest on black velvet. Try to buy one with Elvis, John Wayne, JFK, or Jesus for your treasured spot above the mantle.

However, I have heard of a bad dog with a painting in it.

That must be why there are so many dog themed comics.
