Basic economics: lower taxes stimulates the economy, and a more active economy means more things to tax at the lower rate which increases revenues.
Besides, this lets the people who actually made the money decide what to do with their money instead of the government redistributing it.
I agree with you, Dutchboy1. Your theory has been proven right every time it’s tried. A “rebate” doesn’t work because it’s temporary (doesn’t really “stimulate” much of anything).
In today’s political climate, tax cuts can only be true if I’m sleeping and dreaming.
Yeah, but cutting taxes for the rich doesn’t do anything because when those guys get money, they don’t invest it, they don’t put it into their businesses, they don’t buy things, they just squirrel it away in offshore tax-free investments. When people on the low end get their taxes cut, they spend and stimulate the economy because the people on that end actually have to buy things to live - you know, like food, rent, etc. Poor people buy bread a lot more often than rich people buy yachts.
DOWN WITH TAXES! … and schools and police and fire departments and pothole repairs and parks and beaches and building codes and social security and border guards and elections and all those other stupid things that waste my money. I need my money to buy CDs and DVDs and gas other important things.
Cutting taxes can increase revenue. If you then, like Bush, embark on the biggest increase in Federal spending in American history (until Obama), then there is still a deficit. The same thing happened under Reagan - revenue went way up with the tax cuts, but it was all spent and then some. (And tax cuts increased revenue for Kennedy also - so it’s not just a republican thing.)
Taxes are subject to Calculus. If the tax rate is 0, your revenue is 0. If the tax rate is 100%, your revenue is 0 (although any real system reverts to outright slavery before reaching this point). Somewhere in the middle is the tax rate that maximizes revenue. The last 50 years have repeatedly shown that that optimum lies considerably below current tax rates.
For Socialists, however, taxes are not about increasing revenue. They are about increasing control. The higher the tax rate, the greater the control over your life.

Wouldn’t it be grand if Congress had to live by the laws it makes for the rest of us?

I’m with you, RRAmom! They might actually be motivated to weed out some of the ‘laws’ that don’t do anything except take up space!

Also overlooked is the fact that even the fat cats will still have a lower percentage tax rate with Obama than they had under Reagan.
