As I recall, “voice over” was originally done with two machines (two tracks) then mixed down.
Interestingly, the first two track mix down was done with wire recorders.
Later of course two-track recording was done on one tape. This, thanks to Les Paul. Quite ingenious he.

In the 1950’s I skipped class and went to see Les & Mary at the Times Square Paramont in NYC. On stage with them was the Russ Case Orchestra.

There was a movie in the 60s called “Hold that Tiger.” It had a catchy tune, but I can’t recall who was in it. Jack Lemon? Not sure….
