    So many cartoonists have made jokes about their treatment over the years that you have to wonder if maybe there is some truth behind it. I know that if I was required to come up with something original and funny every single day of the year there would have to be an editor with a whip and a cattle prod in the picture.

    From my imbedded dictionary (Mac Snow Leopard)

    alright |ôlˈrīt| variant spelling of all right . USAGE The merging of all and right to form the one-word spelling alright is first recorded toward the end of the 19th century (unlike other similar merged spellings such as altogether and already, which date from much earlier). There is no logical reason for insisting that all right be two words when other single-word forms such as altogether have long been accepted. Nevertheless, although found widely, alright remains nonstandard.

    all right adjective satisfactory but not especially good; acceptable : the tea was all right. • (of a person) in a satisfactory mental or physical state : “Are you all right? You were screaming.” • permissible; allowable : it’s all right for you to go now. adverb 1 in a satisfactory manner or to a satisfactory extent; fairly well : everything will turn out all right. 2 used to emphasize how certain one is about something : “Are you sure it’s him?” “It’s him all right.” exclamation expressing or asking for assent, agreement, or acceptance : all right, I’ll tell you.

    I will continue to use ‘alright’ without shame or fear. If ‘already’ is correct and acceptable, I have no qualms about ‘alright’!

    We should refudiate the use of the spelling “alright”.

    @SeS1066:

    Go ahead and use “alright,” but note the “Nevertheless” in the passage you quote: “although found widely, alright remains nonstandard.”

    Using nonstandard spelling and grammar marks you, just as dressing oddly marks you. People routinely, unthinkingly make judgements about others based on how they speak and write. Maybe that’s bad, maybe they shouldn’t, but they do.

    Editors get so upset over little language gaffs; it literally burns them up.
