It’s more like 7 1/2 billion tenants these days. And would that things were merely higgledy-piggledy. We’ve long since jumped the shark climate-wise, and using cloth diapers and driving Prii is just feel-good window dressing that won’t help a bit. Then there is The Donald et al.
This strip reminds me how global warming and the environment in general was such a hot topic back in the late eighties and early nineties. This was particularly true in the world of comics where books like Black Orchid and others made it their main focus all aimed at the youth of the day. President George H. W. Bush treated it like a real threat and after Kyoto it looked like the world was finally going to act. And then the denial industry got fully funded, support petered out, and now here we are decades later and this old Outland strip is as cutting edge and relevant today as it was when it first ran. Perhaps this time around we will finally act.
Even many people who consider themselves to be ardent environmentalists think recycling and driving a hybrid are enough. It’s kind of like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. It makes you feel like you’re doing something to help, but you’re not. Combatting climate change and toxic pollution calls for lifestyle changes. I’ve done it (no, I’m not perfect but I will not let the perfect be the enemy of the good) and I still lead a life of luxury unimaginable to billions.
Nazis call for “combat” in their efforts to justify constricting individual freedom. If you had a product worth selling you would not have to rely on the guns of government to make it happen.
