Granddad: Boy, you didn't know I was retired? You thought I was just unemployed all this time?! Riley: I knew you were retired. I just didn't know what the word meant. Granddad: Well, what did you think it meant?! Riley: I dunno...I always figured it was old people slang for "lazy".

A little voice tells me you’re right. Perhaps I should work till the tribe leaves me at the old igloo to move on to the new igloo.

If nanotech can extend life or rejuvenate us, will the retirement age increase? just imagine the tour buses all over the world full of seniors in 30-yr old bodies!

Racist much, Lewreader?
avonsalis about 14 years ago
Hey, Lewreader has irked me in the past but this time I think he’s just using a cultural reference to illustrate a concept that could apply to any culture. Almost everyone eventually comes to recognize when it’s time to “let go,” at least psychologically, of their most feeble elder. Whether it’s an igloo or a DNR order (i.e., race) isn’t the issue.
Even physical abandonment at the end of life is not just Inuit (if they even do at all); lots of other cultures too, and not just nomadic ones. “Little Big Man” had a great (sad, funny, thought-provoking) scene where the elder goes off for his time to die, but comes back in a couple of days because, dang it, his life just failed to end. Even US war movies have often shown the badly wounded guy who insists on being left behind rather than risk the lives of the rest for no likely benefit.
Sometimes, putting something universal in ethnic terms is merely being illustrative, or even poetic.

TEDCOOPI didn’t know stating a fact was racist. Am I wrong, or was that not a way people dealt with they elderly population. “White folk steal their parents homes and assets and ship them off to the old folk home for the government to pay for” Is that racist too? Or are you racist for assuming the only people to use igloos were the Inuit? I belong to the human race. Is there a difference between “races”
