The problem with that example, Priam, is that the police tried to frame a guilty man and got caught.

That was just an excellent example of the old saw, a trial is a competition to see who has the better lawyer.

UMMM. The prosecution tries to prove he’s guilty The defence tries to prove he’s not guilty

And you expect both sides to play fair?

What side wants to abort babies and free murderers? Can aborted babies get a retrial? The poor defendant who raped/murdered your mother/wife/daughter can at taxpayer expense.

“As someday it may happen that a victim must be found, I’ve got a little list, I’ve got a little list, Of society’s offenders who might well be underground, And they never would be missed, they never would be missed!”

A fair trial does not mean either side has a chance to win. It only fair if the guilty get convicted & the innocent go free. Some people need to be taken out & shot. I don’t trust the government that much.

I don’t think there’s anything all that conservative about saying people should get convicted on less-convincing evidence, or anything that liberal about saying people should get convicted only on more-convincing evidence.

Don’t we all want the innocent to go free? It’s just a question of how many probably-guilty people we can stand to let go also, in order to ensure that the innocent do. We all know that there is such a thing as being lucky enough to get away with a crime. That fact doesn’t mean that the concept of proving a case is bogus.
