No fears. She’ll run into Sir Richard Burton any minute now.

Juke, more likely Tim Burton. This seems like some strange scenario he would dream up.

there’s a current radio commercial for a motel chain which talks about the speaker’s GPS showing him as being in a lake in Scotland. are they really that bad? i’ve had occasional troubles with mapquest directions, but never tried a GPS. but, I can read a road map so i don’t really need such things.

yyyguy: They can be. On a recent trip up through Central Pennsylvania, I was riding along the road that is going to become I-99. The GPS wanted me to turn right, off the side of the mountain. It took me 30 miles of driving straight along the road, ignoring its pleas to make a legal U-turn, before the machine caught up with the real road.

I heard once - Eons Ago (well maybe 5 years ago) that GPS systems had some “error” factors. This was because of how the GPS satellites were modified for “Civilian” purposes (different for Military purposes).

    Don’t know if IT’s still True….

Very pleased that readers have gone this long without a reference to Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang.

Pab, I had a less bizarre but similarly odd experience with a GPS a few years ago. Trying to get to a hotel near the SeaTac Int’l Airport, I was told quite clearly to drive down someone’s driveway and into the Sound. Turned out the hotel was on a piece of land with at least two possible town names assigned to it. Giving the “right” town name got me my directions.
