    Good morning, Tribe

In case you didn’t hear, the SSBN Erehwon came into the Big Top docks late last night, breaking through the ice. Thankfully it wasn’t as thick as it was on Ice Station Zebra

Anyway, I”m home after nearly 2 hours on the road (20 minutes at Gerald’s getting a flat fixed). Got as far as the foot of the one bridge I cross and was among one of the first ones turned away. Sigh, so home I came. Called in and told my boss I’d try to get in later and was willing to stay later to input bookings, etc. Got my out of office and my voicemail set up and now I’m sitting here, reading comics, keeping an eye on the blockade where I was turned away. Once it’s gone and traffic moving I’ll make another go. But there was ice all over my car when I got back, including icecicles handing from the sideview mirrors.

Anyway, I’m here with the heater going, listening to the sleet plink on my windows. Back to the comics!!

WE had our snow over the weekend–starting late Saturday, about dusk, and going through midday Sunday, more or less. About 4 inches total, I’d guess. Now it’s just cold. And I hate to think what a bit of wind will do with all the nice, soft, fluffy stuff.

I only made it to the Sunday services at the home parish–one mission called it off; the other I called off. I could likely have gotten there, but maybe not–and it would have been no fun driving without being sure where the road was. And in the dark. And an evening meeting there was canceled too, so it wasn’t just my being a Nervous Nellie…

I just talked to the Center Director (otherwise known as Office Boss). The bridge just reopened about 30 minutes ago, but he decided I should just stay at home as it is so late in the day. I think both he and my department boss appreciate I was trying to get in. Everyone needs every brownie point they can get these days, no matter how well they do the job, etc.

So I’ll probably just veg out a bit, maybe do some tidy up in the kitchen that I didn’t get to yesterday because I procrastinated.

Quaby - Sounds like you’ve got a decent boss. I would think that they’d realize the office location can present a few logistical problems in getting there. That’s one advantage we have here in the “flatlands” of KS, usually if one road is closed, there’s another route that will work.

Quaby - Good thinking on your boss’s ideas. Reminds me of what happened in high school once. The Board of Education here hated to call for a snow day and put off making a decision as late as possible. One day we had a lot of snow but they didn’t close the schools. Less than half the students and teachers were able to make it in so after school started they decided to close school. Those that didn’t come had the day off. To keep from having to make up the day those of us that made it there had to stay until noon!

I know when I was attending WSU in the 80’s, they didn’t cancel classes when the weather was really bad. I would make the effort and show up, but then the next time the class met, the prof would cover the same material for the benefit of those who missed that class.

Wolfie - That was interesting. My husband grew up in western PA during the 70’s, and they were in a weather pattern that brought a lot of snow when he was growing up. That’s one of the reasons he prefers KS - less snow to shovel. If we get more than 6”, it is pretty unusual. Some years we have several snowfalls, but most years, we’re lucky to get one that’s enough to go sledding.

Once in the 80’s we had a blizzard. Wind was over 50 MPH with snow. Even the snowplows were getting stuck and had to quit. I lived in the country outside of the city at the time. An emergency law was passed that made it illiegal for anyone to drive a vehicle in the county for three days. I couldn’t go to work (which was clossed anyway) so the only thing I did was watch TV and talk on the phone for three days. I had just bought 2 grocery sacks full of cupcakes, twinkies, ding-dongs, etc. at a bakery outlet to use them for lunch at work. I ended up eating all of them the three days off.

Ok everyone with snow-a-pults, trebuckets, etc. please call them off. Weve got about 30-40 cm of snow. Thats more than a foot and it was drifting as well. We just spent a good part of the day trying to shovel out our driveway. There are drifts higher than my waist. We got stuck twice just driving half a block.

It is rather nice to be on the other side of the ‘snow day’ workforce. Most of the time I”m able to make it in one way or tuther.

I am so hoping we’ll get the office space just west of the airport. I can get there w/o crossing a bridge if I have to do so. We’ll know soon, we have to be out of the Blackbaud building by 4/30

serena - We didn’t get enough extra to send to you from here. It has been too dry, so as soon as it warms up enough to melt off, the ground will soak it up. Although, it isn’t supposed to get above freezing until Thursday. It might melt some earlier, as tomorrow and Wednesday are supposed to be sunny. I’m guessing you need to blame someone who got snow earlier than us.

@♠Lonewolf♠, I remember the storm of ‘67–or at least walking to Church the next Sunday, going up and down the 3-foot banks of snow where the sidewalk used to be, with the cars going by just beneath us on the plowed road. Let’s see–the next big one was in ‘70–I remember delivering papers by sled in that one with my brother. Then ‘78 and 79, I think. After that, I moved away. I think ‘78 was the winter that got Jane Byrne in trouble…

Out here on the prairie, it only counts when the power goes down–especially for 24+ hours. In ‘83 was the longest, about 4 days, when it was an ice storm, and then stayed cold. We had a little one just a few years ago, only about 30 hours. No sweat.

No, really: if you sweat, it froze! LOL! (Well, I laughed…)

Sojo - It is still falling here. But at least it isn’t real windy, so the visibility is pretty good. I was in OKC for a couple winters ‘79-‘80 & ‘80-‘81, so I suppose it could have happened then. I know the summer of ‘80 was when we had a record breaking heat wave. Of course, my memory isn’t what it used to be, either. I guess I learned from my mom, but I prefer to keep the house well stocked with food & basic necessities. I don’t like planning daily menus, I’d rather cook whatever we are in the mood for, and have the time.

Our snow usually only lasts a few days before it melts. If we get several snow storms a year it’s unusual. In the 70’s we had snow that didn’t melt off for three weeks, very rare here. We don’t get anything like those of you living further north of us.

Sojo - If it was 1981, that would explain why I don’t remember it. I remember one winter (78 or 79) where it stayed so cold that the snow didn’t melt for a couple weeks or longer. At the time I was working downtown, so had to walk outside a few blocks to get to my car. I’ve learned since then how to dress for nippy weather - long underwear! Our snows here in KS do usually melt within a few days, so unless you’ve got a driveway that the shadow of your house blocks it from the sun, you can usually get by without shoveling, if you really don’t want to. Although, it is better to shovel when it is still unpacked snow, because once it turns to ice, then it is horrible to walk or drive on. Our driveway isn’t paved, and it is on the south side of the house, so we don’t bother to shovel anything other than the deck/porch, and not always that. Ours just melt, and soaks down through the rocks, instead of refreezing into ice like it does on pavement.

Not just ice is harder to shovel. Even just drifted snow gets plenty hard. Ad it breaks into blocks, which are not always easy to move aside. Fresh-fallen is much, much easier to move when and where you want.

Unless there’s a wind, in which case it’s time to go inside and break out the hot chocolate, and wonder what the place will look like when it calms down.

A local paper had a nasty letter to the editor about the snowplows and sand trucks–it seemed that, not only did they close up the guy’s driveway more than once this winter, but then a sand truck parked in the guy’s driveway, further smashing the plowed snowpile across his driveway into a rock-hard speed bump of impressive size. He was not a happy camper.

I drove through snow last night. Before it started snowing we went from normal wet curvy roads, gravely wet curvy roads to foggy wet gravely curvy roads then add patches of clear and snow on road. Ot didn’t get much better. Fortunately, I have decided that driving the speed limit or even slower (especially with deep drops and teens in car) is amusing. I do hope the people following who probably had four wheel drive were equally amused.

Getting closer to class time this coming Sunday. Good night all. I read all your comment’s.
