They figured with the snow/ice on the streets, kids might have to stand out even longer waiting on the busses. Although, even the college offices are closed due to the cold weather. The schools could have a difficult time keeping the temperature warm enough. There are a lot of windows. Also, it could simply cost too much for their budget. They also have to be careful of frozen pipes and stuff. Maybe having the water turned on with kids turning on and off faucets all day signicantly increases chances of burst pipes?

     •  Reply
  69. Smiley tongue
Smiley Rmom  over 13 years ago

Ooops! - It might cost more to heat them to comfortable level. I’ve noticed the newer the school building, the less windows. Probably with a/c, they don’t need as many windows, and they’re not cheap. But running water doesn’t freeze as fast, so having water used would decrease the chances of burst pipes. Of course, if they froze overnight (which is when it usually happens), then it would cause a problem when people wanted to use water.

On the other hand, buildings and vehicles aren’t designed to deal well without the modern systems. Like our VW (that got totalled) for instance. The a/c quit working, but so did the driver’s power window. No triangle “wing” windows, either. Hard to handle 100+ weather without a/c in a car with black interior, and can’t roll the window down.

Speaking of school closing, I can remember some winter days when the snow would be blowing so badly that the buses wouldn’t chance it. I lived 12 miles out of town and we used to listen to the radio every morning to see if the buses were running. Lots of times the bus would be late for one reason or another and we would get to swagger into class late. Even better would be the times we would get to go home early because of road conditions. All the town kids were envious. When the temperature dropped to -20*F or colder, my dad would drive us to the end of the laneway so we would have some shelter while we waited.

I don’t want to go back to doing that again.

Grog I hear you BUT, I can’t help it if I think yellow Duck’s feet are fun…..granted a little garish…..well, a LOT GARISH….but they made me smile…..AND you must admit it was easy to keep track of their feet, if you were so inclined.

Hopeandjoy, they may look good on ducks, but I have reservations about football players though. If they have the guts to go with yellow socks then maybe the next step would be pink uniforms.

But yes I did laugh. And when Auburn stopped laughing I’m glad they decided to play football.

Ooops! I hit the wrong button and deleted my own comment. Okay….. ummm…. I locked my keys in the car thanks to Rac0308’s Curse second time out of three. One more to go. When I called to see if mom could spare some time for me, she assumed it was frivolous……. so, I walked 4.9 miles home in 34°weather wearing a long sleeved T-shirt and jeans rather than explain.

I was reading your comments about cars and school with or without A/C. When I was school no A/C misserable sweeting hard to think. Temper’s would fly student’s would get in trouble. We had one car with power window I absoultly loved it could control, when one didn’t need use of A/C could power window’s down for fresh air and if rain came would have easier power window up. Our car is manuel and I don’t really like it dark inside and extremely hot during summer. Too much trouble to have a pasenger window up or down manuel and at times I could not pull over and raise window if rain came. I would far rather have a powered window.

♥Kab♥, that’s fine - until the power windows stopped working as mine did. I have long enough arms so that I can reach the other side.

Grog believe me I am not arguing with you about powered windows. I don’t have long arms and had to drive to a repair shop when our window was down and it was pooring rain out. With our current car we bought what we could afford. Our previous car I wished after ward we put a rebuilt engine in. This car hard powered windows not bad on gas millage, silver, and not hot inside. Current car get’s very hot inside, our A/C quite so I had to drive my hubby’s truck to work this was heat of summer we had to save money cost over $600 we did not have. Took more than a year. Hubby had retired before hand. I found this out going to work and I sweated badly almost got over heated even with a window down.

My BIL would agree with most of you about not liking powered window’s their current vehicle does have powered window. This car was abandoned off a HWY he contacted through ven # and got it for $100. This is their family and business car. Their car is also a stick shift. He’s had to have transmission overhauled and stick shift repaired.

Well anyway, by the time I had money to repair the windows, I also had the money to buy a new car. So I did the latter instead. But I will get the windows repaired on the old car. It’s just not a priority right now.

For me school during summer time was miserable, at home we did not keep house that cool. Window A/C was used not at night so nights were very hot. Only part tolerable about school checking out books. I have a close to last surviving uncle and he doesn’t use A/C at all not during summer uses heater alot. Summer time 90+ his wife after 60 years just suffers. Uses electric blanket up high year around even during summer.

Hello all got cleaned up waiting fo hair to dry then to bed. One more day of freedom then I hope my brain can observe next class. At the machinist hall held local aircraft fair for laid off workers. From what the news showed a lot of people. A lot needy workers will be turned down. Ones who want the job will have to relocate. The machinist hall is not far from where we live. Our streets except neighborhood ones are close to normal. I envy ones who have full time work. Get out of owing faster. Good night all.

There is a popular theory that if you sleep on top of your books, you can learn by osmosis. I think it takes a while though. So you may want to sleep on your books every night.
