Near this spotAre deposited the Remains of oneWho possessed BeautyWithout Vanity,Strength without Insolence,Courage without Ferocity,And all the Virtues of ManWithout his Vices. This Praise, which would be unmeaning flatteryIf inscribed over Human Ashes,Is but a just tribute to the Memory of“Boatswain,” a DogWho was born at Newfoundland, May, 1803,And died at Newstead Abbey Nov. 18, 1808.
My Dog by Robert William Service’Twas in a pub just off the StrandWhen I was in my cups,There passed a bloke with in his handTwo tiny puling pups; And one was on me with a bound,Seeking to lick my face,And so I bought him for a poundAnd took him to my place.
Three acres by the shore I own,A hut, a pint wood; And there for fifteen years aloneHe shared my solitude. It was his own, his only world,And when with hunting spent,Each night beside my bed he curled,And slept in sheer content.
My dog is dead. Though lone I beI’ll never have another; For with his master-worship heWas closer than a brother. My foot is frail and I am old,Yet how my heart can pityPups straining on a short leash-holdAnd pent up in the city.
From all thought of self above,And purged of sex emotion,I know no form of living loveSo deep as dogs devotion.I have no hope at all of heaven,I’ve lived in sin and strife; But thank God! I at least have givenOne dog a happy life.
“This hound,” answered Eumaeus, “belonged to him who has died in a far country. If he were what he was when Odysseus left for Troy, he would soon show you what he could do. There was not a wild beast in the forest that could get away from him when he was once on its tracks. But now he has fallen on evil times, for his master is dead and gone, and the women take no care of him. Servants never do their work when their master’s hand is no longer over them, for Jove takes half the goodness out of a man when he makes a slave of him.” As he spoke he went inside the buildings to the cloister where the suitors were, but Argus died as soon as he had recognized his master.
(I just have to balance the sad story from The Odyssey with a picture of a young and very loving and loyal little guy. I was looking in Bing, but why go searching when I’ve got the perfect example right here? So, here’s Max…………again!)
I believe x-Tech said yesterday that Thumper thumps everywhere but on his IE. I have IE at work here, and oddly, Thumper isn’t thumping now for me either. But it’s still a REALLY CUTE picture happy!
Well looking at all these cheerful poems again, I just thought of some sheer bloody poetry by Nazareth. It’s not pretty and goes like this:
Woke up this morning My dog was deadSomeone disliked himAnd shot him through the headI woke up this morningAnd my cat had diedI’m gonna miss herSat down and criedCame home this eveningMy hog was goneThe people here don’t like meI think I’ll soon move onAnd now somethin’s happenedThat would make a saint frownI turned my back andMy house burned downWoke up this morning My dog was deadSomeone disliked himAnd shot him through the headI woke up this morningAnd my cat had diedDon’t you know I’m gonna miss herSat down and cried
tomorrow morning i may not check in.my sister and her husband, and possibly one of the nephews is going to take over for my respite caregiver at the end of her shift.i am going to get from 9:30 to 6:30 off.…when i get mom in bed tomorrow , if i am not to tired i will look in and see if anything interesting happened.i will probably go to the aquarium at Newport. i my also check out the bay front. there is also two lighthouses in town i might go see.i think i will decide to see what i am going to go see just before i go see it.im tired of routine.the last thing i will do before going home will be shop for the home, so it still wont be a total selfish “me” day.
@mightaswellbe That is a very sad but insightful poem written from the perspective of a society dog, from the description of the outfits and toys etc. I’d cry if I knew someone who treated their dog that way.
Right now I’m in the middle of watching Executive Suite,Shika. A good movie with an all-star cast headlined by Bill Holden and Barbara Stanwyck. I’ll be back when my movie’s over.
Yeah, IE’s doing some strange things to me on my home computer of late, Fellow Baby I actually thought the transition to Firefox would be a pain in the a$$, but so far the transition of websites & passwords has been pretty seamless. It is strange to have my favorites list on the right hand side, but I’ll get used to it. Eventually. I’ll test it through the weekend before I make it my default browser though.
Fellow Baby, my Firefox is on my left, and my IE is on my right! I much prefer my Firefox, though it gives me troubles, ONCE IN A GREAT WHILE! But not often!

Adapted from the poem by Bruce Lansky in Rolling in the Aisles, published by Meadowbrook Press.
Characters:ChildMomDog (an optional, non-speaking part)
My Dog Has Got No MannersChild:
My dog has got no manners. I think he’s very rude. He always whines at dinnertime while we are eating food.
And when he’s feeling thirsty and wants to take a drink, he takes it from the toilet instead of from the sink.
He never wears a pair of pants. He doesn’t wear a shirt. But worse, he will not shower to wash away the dirt.
He’s not polite to strangers. He bites them on the rear. And when I’m on the telephone, he barks so I can’t hear.
When I complained to Mommy, she said,
Mom:
“I thought you knew: the reason that his manners stink— he learns by watching you.”
The End!

Argus and Odysseus (Homer, The Odyssey Book XVII)

I have a dog.His name is Fred.He won’t play fetch.He won’t play dead.
He won’t shake handsor sit or stayor bark or begor run and play.
He won’t roll over, shake or crawl. In fact, he won’tdo tricks at all.

Hi Grog! What’s happening tonight? A game?
Shikamoo Premium Member about 12 years ago
My doggy likes to disco dance. He boogies every night. He dances in his doghousetill the early morning light.
The other dogs come runningwhen they hear my doggy swing.A few will play their instruments. The others dance and sing.
They pair off with their partnersas their tails begin to wag. They love to do the bunny hop,the fox trot and the shag.
You’ll see the doghouse rockin’as a hundred dogs or moreall trip the light fantasticon the doghouse disco floor.
At last, at dawn, they exitin the early morning breeze, and stop to sniff the fire hydrants, bushes, lawns and trees.
I just don’t understand itfor although it looks like fun.I can’t see how they fit insidethat doghouse built for one.
