A lovely photo of the even lovelier Mary Pupford, has been dropped into the beautiful 1917 artwork of this poster…
She is so pretty…. long silky ears shining, pink ruffled dress setting off her big brown eyes with their purplie shadow…. and that pink lipstick. Oh my.
In spite of her name, Ms. Pupford was already a full grown dog, who specialised in portraying young pups.
With her innocent face… talk about making puppy eyes!…. she got away with it… in fact, did a fine job…. in film after film….
and later starred in adult vehicles… but even then, often playing younger.
The humans tried to capitalise on her success….
but this grown up human woman doesn’t have quite the innocent appeal….
in spite of her mugging for the camera.
(She did manage a modicum of success, though, in similar human films.)
Years later, an actual basset puppy, extremely talented, and a new star in Howlywood,
and a human imitator, a little girl at the time, followed a similar trajectory, remaking some of the same films in both basset and human versions, respectively.
Fun to compare…. older vs newer, human vs dog….
though to me, the basset versions always win.
Oh Norman!
We’re coming in an hour, for coffee and cake with you and Angela….
We’ll want to be discussing Stel’s poster and this film…. not plummeting from the porch.
Please can’t you quit fooling around in that shrubbery and try to fix the railing before we get there?
I have a new tablet a Christmas present! I am still trying to come to terms with it, I haven’t been able to get to Sherpa/Cleo yet, I have to go on the PC maybe one of you cyber specialists can help ~~~~~ please xxx

I have to see this, just to see Cleo dance with Bill “Bojangles” Robinson on the stairs. The ears flapping, alone, must be the highlight of the movie.

I think Farside99’s thinking of The Littlest Rebel.

Ten years later, Mrs Nizely is also bush-diving. Will these Ballardites never give their shrubs a break?

I thought it was Sunnybark Farm, but I get confused.

You know, I hate to comment favorably on my competition, but I think Pupcraft Pictures did a nice job with this adaptation.

What an adorable poster today! Like Perky says, it made me smile!
Forgive my absence, but I’m held captive in our hospital with some sort of infection around either my heart or lung. I’ll write when I can.
I’ll keep smiling!
