There was some discussion going on in the comments of this strip as to why babies tear the pages out of books. I have several theories, but in this case I believe the joke is that Doug knows he’ll get to keep the book if he damages it. Notice his happy smile in Panel 2, right before he rips out the page.
(BTW, this strip’s triumphant “SHRIIIIP!”–an inspired combination of “shred” and “rip”–more than makes up for Sunday’s laughably lame “SHAAAA-BONK!” The only problem I really have with today’s installment is that the book looks so one-dimensional in panel 4.)

I never did understand why babies always do that to a book. What twisted psychology makes babies rip out pages from any and all books.
It would be a good PHD subject - maybe win you an Ignobel in Sciences/ Sociology.

Babies just like the sound it makes. And the fact that their fat little hands and arms can do it.

Nah……It’s just a pre-emptive strike against all the schoolbooks that cometh.

It’s a learning thing. Don’t you rip those annoying ads out of magazines?

I personally love the self promotion for the book that needed to be bought
