The hair actually is pulled out your armpits, and legs, etc. As you grow up. Eventually, it snaps like a rubber band, and your hair recedes into you. That’s my theory.

mfcoace: I’m feeling so old now! In the 70’s, I actually had one of those dolls with the navel-crank to lengthen/shorten its hair.
My 2-year-old is showing definite signs of becoming a Ruthie. I look forward to hearing her theories!
