Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau for November 09, 2008
Transcript:
Bartender: I gotta find a new line of work... I'm tired of enabling! B.D.: Hey, Jimmy! Bartender: Hey, B.D. - you're in awfully early... B.D.: Am I? How's everything going? Bartender: Okay, I guess. B.D.: Doesn't sound like it. Bartender: Well, to be honest, B.D., I'm getting tired of serving some of your battle buddies... they come in here, I pour them a few pops, and then they go home and take out their problems on their families. It kind of nags at me. I dunno. I'm probably overthinking it. I need to suck it up, I guess... B.D.: Have a good one, Jimmy. Bartender: You, too, B.D.

Maybe now with a new administration, the VA will be more proactive and veterans will get the help they need from things like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Everybody needs somebody to talk to.

bell3 - yeah - let’s hope.
But, Jimmy’s griping, and inadvertent truth-telling, has sent B.D. out the door without a ‘pop’ - he’s ‘suckin’ it up - doesn’t look happy about it, but he’s doin’ it.

Doonesbury makes me proud when he covers veterans issues like this. So many people slam him hard because of his so called liberal views. But at least he does more than put a yellow ribbon on his car to support the troops. He tells their story and helps us to remember that they are out there and the some are suffering pretty bad. Don’t forget, Tuesday is Veternas Day folks. Trudeau hasn’t.

My own military service was almost 40 years ago and didn’t involve combat, but I’ve been where B.D is nonetheless.
Hard to say whether Jimmy is really an enabler, but maybe he is if he says he is. Alcohol abuse is a bleeep from every angle.

Gee, I don’t mean to change the subject, BUT UncaAlby has not made a comment on ANYTHING for 5 days. I don’t agree with his views, but at least he was provacative and articulate in his. Are you out there, Unc?

Have any of you checked out ‘The Sandbox’? He cares about the soldiers.

Obama has a lot on his plate but hopefully in the not-to-distant future her can address the drug war. The billions being spent stuffing our citizens in prisons for a morals issue should be redirected to HELP those that need a crutch, which is most of us.

Susan001, I only compare Unc to Farleftside on the Quigmans who calls people bum-biting rat toadies!! When I disagreed with him he spouted a threat. I didn’t think that Unc ever threatened anyone. He’s just annoying.

My son and I voted 2 weeks early here in Palm Beach. The crowd waiting, even in the rain, had such hope written on their faces. It was such a wonderful change of pace from 2000 when the buses full of Republican interns showed up to harass, screaming and shouting at those who were doing the recount. I was here, I saw it, I heard it. And you don’t have to be a vet to care about them. Bring them hope, Prez-Elect.

Farleftside, as he calls himself, is a very loose cannon. We tried asking him civil questions about why he hates Buddy Hickerson so much. He only replies with rants. I think he may be off of his meds.

Wow, Margaritem, I’m glad you warned me, upping his meds were going to be my next suggestion. His last sentence to my comment was nonsense. Except for ‘knock you up in the morning’. I just started commenting. Maybe I should stop now.

It’s too bad the VA has to cut back on services just when there is a whole new batch of veterans having difficulty coming back into civilian life. 33 years after service and I still need all the VA help I can get, and they have just cut new enrollment to 0 except for OIF and OEF. Glad I enrolled before the latest cut in services.

The problem with the VA is that many administrative government officials havent been in the military and don’t understand that you can’t run VA and other military programs like you run civilian programs. It just doesnt work. Military retirement is a good example. Many feel that the military retirement system should be run just like the other federal retirement systems. Just one of the main faults with that is that if I work 20 years civil service I’m relatively fine and health. Those of us who make it 20 years in the military are usually physically and/or emotionally broken. Like BD and his buddies in todays comic. Vets need special care.

I’ve found that in the case of someone like farleftside, it’s better to just ignore them. He doesn’t seem to be able to give rational answers.

Thanks Margaritem, good advice. Susan001 thinks that maybe UncaAlby and Farleftside are the same. Multiple personalities explain a lot. ;D

I am really, really glad Trudeau got into these things.
