Peter: A "79"?! But... but... that's a "C"! I can't go home with a "C"! Teacher: I gave you the grade you earned, Peter. Peter: I mean, take problem four- shouldn't I at least get a little partial credit? Teacher: I suppose writing "I haven't a clue how to do this" Does take some effort. Peter: And loo kat how efficiently problem five...

Could someone explain to me the USA grade system? I thought with a C you passed the exam. In my country we use a scale from zero to ten.

It could be more of a parent not giving allowance situation. “http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AcademicgradinginNorthAmerica”

Actually, anything above an F is passing in American high school. In University a D is still technically passing but some programs require you to maintain a certain GPA overall.

It seems a lot easier to pass over there than here in Italy. If I get 5 out of 10 in a subject I repeat the year.
Anyways, I understand Peter concern ;-)

C is passing, Tetsuo, but his parents have very high standards. Don’t forget,Peter’s little brother is a genius who has never gotten anything but an A.

Actually, his brother Jason has complained when his “A” had less than four pluses after it. A “C” is supposed to be average, but everyone wants their kids to be above average. GPA is critical to getting into a prestige college.

in my school we have to get at least an 80% or we have to retake the test.

In Lake Wobegone, “all children are above average”

In most public schools an “A” is equivalent to what was a “C–” fifty years ago. Peter’s “C” would have had him repeating the course.

“I haven’t a clue how to do this” says it all. Peter did not adequately study for the exam, and deserves the grade he is getting. The teacher should not budge.

Tetsuo, you 0 to 10 points, the US uses the 0 to 100%, but it is basically the same concept. And yes he passes with a C, which is considered average and a B is considered ABOVE average.

My sister considered herself to be “dumb” because she got Bs and Cs when I got As and Bs, so I can relate to RayC’s post. The UK university I went to used the 100% scale, but to get an “A” required a grade of 90%, and they passed anything above 30! =:-O

In the USA, A-D is passing, but parents usually feel C is just costing by, and D is not trying. B is normal, and A is great. F is failing and unacceptable. It might vary between families, but most do not like a C unless the kid’s been getting D’s and F’s. Most make deals for rewards with their kids to usually get B or better (f the kids is mart but lazy, an A is demanded to force work). The +, and - doesn’t really figure into much. A C+ is not really better than a C. A B- is never a B. Different families do things differently, but on average, most do not tolerate C’s and just getting by. The Fox’s would be no exception.

Yeah, but Roger and Andy should know, that Peter isn’t that much of a scholar. He’s not Jason! So I think they should be satisfied with a C.

WOW. Our grading system is really different. 93-100 is an A, 86 to 92 is a B, 85 - something is a C, something - 70 is a D, and 69 and below is failing.

Very efficiently botched Peter. Well done.
