Good grief, shaving brushes haven’t been around for years. It’s probably more of a fossil than anything they’ll dig up.

I feel kind of out of place here. I’m so used to Margueritem being here when I log in. I actually miss her, I hope she’s o.k. I’m not used to being the first one to post on Calvin And Hobbes. Besides I like it when she sets the pace.

I just wish that some people wouldn’t try and take it over with their off-topic comments.

Remember grazer, that these comics date from prior to 1995 (in this one either 1987 or 1988), although the shaving-brush was considered antiquated in North America by the time C&H had original run (I can remember shopping for double-edge blades to take to India in 1983–with some difficulty, some were found for the purpose, and they turned out to be export-quality India manufacture).

True green_engineer, the sand will be a top-quality exfoliant.

Today, they use modern instruments in palaeontology such as shaving brushes instead of the old-fashioned C14-method.

Well I still use shaving brushes (for shaving).

I’ve got 2.

One is about 40 years old and I use it for travelling. About 20 years ago the kids bought me a new one, but I couldn’t bring myself to throw the old one out, so I use the new one just at home.

They get better with age. Shaving takes a little longer but that’s a good thing.

Calvin’s Dad will be pissed.

Once again, Calvin has discovered one of life’s universal truths–Most of it is just prolonged periods of boredom punctuated by brief periods of intense panic. Learning to embrace tedium is one of the secrets of happiness.

JFri - Don’t get me started on taking inventories. I used to have to do it at the end of every month. Talk about mind-numbing jobs.

I know right nighthawks? One time I was walking with my guy friend and he saw a white rock. It was a bone and we rushed back to my house to ask my dad what it was. Turned out it was a cow bone. Pretty cool. I think I lost it or he stole it. I should ask some time. But I always forget.

Hi! (staggers in) I feel asleep at the switch last night.

That is what kept me from going into archeology, all that painstaking stuff with the tiny brushes. ;-)

He should come excavate in my back garden, I think a barn used to be there about 80 years ago. Iron scraps, old tobacco-spit pottery jug bits, green and purple glass bits, and even old marbles.

JFri and Cleo, please don’t mention inventory. I used to work for a fabric store and I HATED inventory week. I wanted to schedule my vacation for that time but they wouldn’t let me. Everyone was needed on the floor to do the counting or wait on customers. BORING

Just got home in time to see that Calvin got his dad’s shaving brush. ther will be trouble ahead if dad finds out. (gulp)!

I’ve done (real) inventory and I’ve done (mock) archaeology. The tedium of either is (to me) overrated, although very real. ENFPs can find relief through doing such things. Calvin (an apparent ENFP-in-development) just hasn’t figured out how yet; he’s too busy avoiding work in principle in order to do so. :)

Even so, like Calvin I tend to file things in my workspace by the “archaeological method”. Everything is laid down in “tels”, according to their dates of deposition. ;)

We used to see signs like this (one sign per line) driving on the old highways. There were many verses, but this is the only one I remember.

i do inventory on a daily basis (cycle counts). fortunately, i have other responsibilities, but the ongoing counts mean there’s never a giant, close down the warehouse, type of inventory to do. we did one once, about 10 years ago to prove to the auditors that the cycle count process worked with almost no errors, and haven’t had to do one since. so i guess computers are good for something other than reading old comic strips!

As an anthropologist, I can vouch for the “mind-numbing” part in archaeology, I prefer cultural anthro.

It’s interesting how quickly Calvin’a enthusiasm changed to boredom. This is his problem at school also.
