I think Viking’s cameras would’ve been a bit slow to deal with that. Whatever image would’ve shown up would’ve been even stranger than our heroes imagine. :)
I guess it’s fortunate they haven’t been in front of any cameras while on Earth… their images would have been broadcast across the country on the evening news!
who hasn’t done something like that, intentionaly or not? With cameras everywhere it’s likely you’ve done something funny or embarrasing thats been seen on camera.
The boys had a good laugh but that was all. NASA still wouldn’t know that they’re there unless they stumbled upon a more recent Mars mission like Pathfinder (‘97) or the twin Mars Exploration Rovers (MER; landed in 2004). Calvin & Hobbes apparently either landed near Chryse Planitia or Utopia Planitia depending upon which Viking lander they found. Gusev Crater (MER Spirit) or Meridiani Planum (MER Opportunity) to find another active Mars lander mission that has cameras and that would take years. The boys also were making weird noises but there are no barometric transducers (microphones) on the rovers so that would be for naught also.
TYPO: They boys would have to walk to Gusev Crater or Meridiani Planum from where they are to get to the MER rovers and that could take years.
p.s. Their antics remind me of the time they put their behinds in wet cement in an attempt to get the same sort of response from someone but that time it came with adverse consequences.
I LOVE it! I have been reading Cand H since they were new in the newspapres and I can’t get enough. I can’t wait to get home and read today’s strip. Thsoe faces of Calvin are as good as his school pictures!
My son and I did something like that when they first put the widescreen tv surveillance camera screen in one of the Cumberland Farms. It’s right behind the girls when you go up to the counter to check out. My friend from school was manager at the time and we did it for her since they said she was in the office. She came out hysterical and said you both are crazy! Good times! Good times!

Boys, so have I…

Well, THAT will certainly give NASA a negative attitude toward Martian life forms (if the Viking is still working).
cleokaya about 15 years ago
NASA needs to have a attitude adjustment.

Wherever they are or whatever they’re doing, the underlying factor in it all is that there is a little bit of C&H in all of us.
ninmas about 15 years ago
heck, i’d do that if i was there!
lazygrazer about 15 years ago
Long time C&H devotee but don’t remember seeing this priceless stuff. What fun!

Sorry, Calvin & Hobbes! The Viking I and II missions ended in the early 1980s. The last transmission from Viking I was August 11, 1982. See

This is all based on Calvin’s imagination so the actual facts don’t count.
