    I remember my son doing that at that age. He was so thrilled he used the entire black crayon on the white piece of paper and you couldn’t see any bit of white whatsoever. There was so much crayon on it that it seemed like it would bleed through to the other side of the paper. He was upset that some of the crayon came off on my hand when I picked it up. It was supposed to “all” stay on the paper. Luckily we had another black crayon so he could fix that section. I left it overnight in the hopes that it could somehow be picked up in the next day without further incident! It eventually went to the refrigerator for everyone who came to admire with his other works of art.

    He could have just used a sheet of black construction paper and saved a crayon’s life.

    Oh, come, Calvin, you’re just making that up.

    We may have the makings of a well-paid abstract artist here…if he survives Susie’s, Moe’s and Hobbes’ maulings. :))

    Love that comment, kreole, but it’s all good! Keep ‘em comin’!

    Dino-1: As a young lad, I had the same problem with the black crayon pealing off the paper that your son had. And when I went back over it with fresh crayon that pealed off too. I think the only way around that would be to use black marker, but “back in the day” we didn’t have it and black water color would have bled through the cheap, school art paper. My teacher put my black picture on the wall. I was never sure if it was because she appreciated what I had done or if she was trying to embarrass me.

    I colored a cow eating grass and when I handed it in the teacher asked why the paper had nothing on it… it was just a blank piece of white paper? I told her the cow ate all the grass and went home! Gezz… Some teachers had no imagination whatsoever!

    I agree, he should’ve started with a black sheet of paper and then coloured white and red or whatever wasn’t black.

    Hi guys, nice to be back after XMAS.

    If he was drawing a white Xmas, I bet he would still ask Suzie for a White Crayon just to bug her.

    @AJCA, @Norman:

    The classic answer is “a newspaper,” but since nobody REaDs them anymore, the RED is the ink on the corporate financials.

    But the post was triggered by @Mishka ‘s suggestion of (Calvin’s) red blood!

    I know how Susie feels. I was really obsessed about my crayons staying “perfect” back then too! But unlike Susie foolishly letting Calvin borrow hers and then expecting it back in the same condition she loaned it when she knows what he’s like(!), NOBODY was EVER allowed to use mine!!!!!

    I propose that the more creative the artist, the more abused their crayons will appear. How many recall kids who would intentionally peel off the paper, or perhaps even intentionally break crayons to particular lengths and then color with the broad side of the crayon rather than the point? That and smudging colors together with your thumb. That was cutting edge stuff on the kindergarten art circuit.
