Good morning ALL! I just got back from the rain forest and so have been living with bugs for the last couple of days and I come back to find Calvin with his own bug problems! Seems this is one project Calvin would’ve wanted to do.
By the way, I wonder if he has a hemiptera on the bottom of his shoe ‘cause that’s the only true “bug”. All others are insects.
When I was a little girl, my grandfather awakened me at 5 in the morning, than we walked in a wood next our house shook the may-bugs from the trees and trampled them, we great fun together!
Suzie would be looking on the right if they live on a cul-de-sac. Or the bus route requires the bus to come from that direction and then turn around in order to pick them up.
Suzie probably collected her bugs in an efficient and scientific manner: tweezers, sugical gloves, ziploc sandwich bags. For her a specimin collected in the name of science is fine; a bug squashed under a sneaker is gross. But I love how she’s the voice of logic and reason while Calvin doesn’t hear a word she’s saying. As usual he’s totally in his own world; just today it’s panic-driven.
The bus is on the other side of the street. We DO have 2 lanes here in the tricky USA, where every bus I have to stop for has kids that cross the street getting on or off of it.
When the bus comes to a halt, with flashing lights on, traffic going in both directions must stop allowing children to cross the street safely. The bus driver will signal the children when it is safe to cross. This will allow Calvin a few more precious seconds to stomp some more “bugs” or insects as they case may be. Of course nurturing Susie is full of “You Should Have” and “You Ought To” advice. And as someone has already observed Calvin is in his own little world. Watterson is an astute observer of human nature. His insight delights me. I agree with 3hourtour - just run C & H repeats !!!
May bugs? We have June bugs- hard shelled beetles. Cats and dogs love to catch them, then they show up in their poop. Ugh!
Susie has her job cut out for her to domesticate Calvin. Of course, hormones may help.
Thanks for the concern Marg. No, No botflies (Dermatobia hominis) but I did pick up some Boughtbeers; only down in Mexico they are called Cervezascompradas.
Who says you have to get along to be in love, especially at that age?
My theory is that Calvin is an ENFP Inspirer and Susie an INFJ Protector: a relationship of Contrasts. Love each other, drive each other crazy, won’t admit any of it until much later.
And if you doubt that Calvin loves Suzie, wait until his transmogrifier brings out his “good side” and puts it in separate bodily form.
Susie’s carrying something under her right arm in the first panel that might possibly be her bug collection but knowing her, she probably got her assignment done a month ago shortly after it was first discussed by the teacher and has already turned it in by now!
But rest assured, unlike Calvin, who spent at least a month daydreaming about all the fun he was going to have with his (hopefully red!) beanie propeller hat, Susie did get her assignment done!!!

Why is Susie looking to the right for the bus? I thought C&H was set in the US, not UK or Australia.

Well, at least Calvin’s sole (soul) is in it, and Susie’s tongue, also …but he’s still a heel. “If the shoe fits, wear it!”

Marvee, I’m used to them being called Mayflies (which aren’t flies) and Junebugs (which aren’t bugs) Does that help?
Now i’m going to go have a boughtbeer with Poindexter.

bleepingdeadalien, I don’t see that at all. He can’t get along with anyone but Hobbes and even that isn’t even a perfect relationship.
