Oh, woe-ways you Susie! Stifle it already, will you!?!

You would think she would be the kid who chose to sit in the front row anyways.

The other day I browsed through a C&H book at a bookshop, and as I read a few strips, I couldn’t help but wonder what margueritem would say to it, or what Yukoner’s take would be. A big thank you to margueritem, Yukoner, Ladywolf, and EVERYONE else, for making Calvin and Hobbes even more fun. I’m very silent around here, but wanted to take a moment to say this. :)

Nobody could have thought up Calvin. There has to be a real little brat out there that Watterson just observed and wrote about.

She should get him two erasers, one on each side of his head.

Someone said something about recess, I believe it will be between Calvin’s eyes.

    Foxtrot,

If you’re interested in where Watterson got his inspiration and ideas, get the Calvin and Hobbes 10th Anniversary Book, published in 1995. Lots of behind the scenes stuff about what goes into the making of a comic strip (although I can’t agree with his take on comic book superheroes …)

G’Morning Mike Firesmith amd Loki. G’Morning Grebulon.

Susie has a lot to learn about Boys. I agree with MrsLukeSkywalker, Susie is front of classroom material.

I once met a woman who knew Bill Watterson and said that her grandson was one of several kids used to model Calvin’s character–and that he could have BEEN Calvin, in her opinion.

When I was in school, the smartest ones got to sit in the back. Us dumber ones had to sit up front where the teacher could keep an eye on us and maybe we might learn something.

Good day to all! The Week-end!!! In my classroom the students get to sit where they want to, and the “Susie Derkins” almost always end up at the front. Its their “niche” in the classroom ecosystem. The students at the opposite end of the spectrum (the Calvins) seem to have an opposite charge to the teacher’s desk and get repelled to a point as far away from it as they can physically get. Primary school is different though if I can remember back a half a century.

With all her experience with Calvin, Miss Wormwood had to know that he was at the bottom of that interaction. Maybe she didn’t want him that close to her. Poor Suzie!

“Us dumber ones had to sit up front…” It’s “we dumber ones”, dummy. I’m only kidding seriously. I couldn’t resist; it just fit the context of your statement. I’m sure you learned many other things.

Being shy as a child, I never liked sitting in front of the class! But despite Susie’s anger and disgust at being the one who got into trouble instead of Calvin (who instigated the whole thing), I’d just be glad to be away from him for a change if I were her … maybe now she can get more class work done without him to bother her!!!!!

As I remember, the troublemakers would be placed at a desk next to the teacher, not even in the front row. That way he would not distract, or be distracted by, the other students. Possibly a good plan for what we now call ADHD, but it probably felt like punishmnt.

Foxtrot – I always assumed Calvin had a little (or a lot) of Watterson himself in him.

Re: sitting up front as a punishment, I always wanted to sit up front but was too tall (5’5”) – now I’m shorter than all my friends and many of my female students were over 6 ft tall.

Poindexter – the same students sit in the back of the lecture hall when they get to the university too – brains up front, no-brains in the rafters – and then they complain that they can’t hear. I smile and say “lots of seats down front folks.”

I liked the front of the class. But, I was often one of the shortest in the class and couldn’t see over the other kids. Besides when your last name starts with “W,” it’s nice to be near the front once in a while.

I always liked to sit at the front too. There was some competition for those seats from other young scholars such as myself, affectionately referred to by the laggards in the back row as “the brown-nosers.”
