LX013, Jiminy Cricket was a Disney character, who sings what is considered to be the universal Disney theme song, “When You Wish upon a Star” in the movie “Pinocchio.” The last line of the song is, “When you wish upon a star, your dreams come true.”
Since Calvin’s wish didn’t come true, however, he wants to “skoosh” Jiminy Cricket for making a false promise – that is, he wants to step on him and squish him into oblivion.
LOL Calvin !
Love the way he looks around for the million dollars !

Great examples of magical thinking, whether by J. Cricket or by Calvin.
Wait a minute, The original The Adventures of Pinocchio indeed included a Talking Cricket who got killed (but showed up later as a ghost), but I don’t think the original story came with a sound track!
Comics (particularly Calvin And Hobbes, Peanuts, Wizard of ID etc.) and cartoons (Disney, Cartoon Network) have always been the best source of entertainment and creativity for me.
Glad to see the two meet each other.
@mythreesons: Flip back to the comments on August 18, scroll down the first page until you see HUGE font all in caps. Marg had an accident going downhill on her bike and broke some bones in her face. She’s home recovering. She sure is missed!
I still like to wish on the first star I see in the night sky. Even more promising is a wish on a shooting star. I made lots of wishes last week. I’m still waiting. Guess I’m not as impatient as Calvin.
What would you do with a cool million dollars, Calvin? ‘Right now’ is the buzzword right now.
“If I Had a Million Dollars” Are you only looking for self-gratification?
Your eyes are finite; God’s eyes are infinite!
“For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him.” - II Chronicles 16:9
Why is it always a “cool” million? I would love it as well, but it would be “hot” because it would be flying out of my hand! That makes it worth at least two in the bush, wouldn’t you say? legaleagle48, my compliments!
I prefer another C&H where Hobbes wishes for a million dollars and a ride on the space shuttle, and Calvin wishes for a PB&J sandwich.
When Hobbes denigrates Calvin’s choice of wish he just quietly munches his sandwich and says “I got my my wish”.
Or was it the other way ‘round (who wished for what)?
Google has found the answer - it was Calvin who wished for a million trillion dollars, his own space shuttle, and his own continent. Hobbes said he’d wish for a sandwich, which Calvin sneered at but later while eating Hobbes had the last laugh “I got my wish”.
Muzition: No I do not flag religious post. If I don’t like someone’s religious statements I simply move along…Besides, as long as someone’s beliefs aren’t picking my pockets or breaking my legs ,then what do I care .
Many people have found religious and/or psychological meanings in C&H. That’s what often starts a good conversation here. I think it’s great as long as people are respectful of others’ opinions.
Yes, that counts! You have to work for your wishes.
Does this strip tie in with yesterday’s discussion of the magic of electricity? In today’s world of specialization, no one can understand everything. Dad should have admitted that he couldn’t explain it but that there are people who can and maybe Calvin will want to study that sometime.
Here locally a laid off worker unemployment starting to run out did a lottery ticket and won big time. She said on news she was getting in financial straits the winnings after taxes would help her tremendously.
I’ve wished for extra money nothing happens. Outside hubby’s truck getting hit and insurance paying off. Part went to CC.
Thanks again, everyone. I’m feeling it today, not as perky as yesterday. Legaleagle great job on the explanation for LX013. She’s Austrian, and doesn’t always understand some of our pop culture references.
Marg! You are here, fine!
Sometimes I have realy great problems with understanding and writeing, but it’s a good training for me!
Legaleagle realy did a very good job!
I check out my mailbox with much the same attitude as Calvin in the third panel. Not much has happened. Puddleglum - since “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” perhaps God is looking for some one other than any of us…..
Barenaked Ladies: Last stanza of ‘If I had a million dollars:’
If I had a 1,000,000 (If I had a 1,000,000)
i’d buy you a green dress ( but not a real green dress that’s cruel)
If I had a 1,000,000 (If I had a 1,000,000)
I’d but you some art ( A Picasso or a Garfunkel)
If I had a 1,000,000 (If I had a 1,000,000)
I’d buy you a monkey (haven’t you always wanted a monkey?)
If I had a 1,000,000 If I had a 1,000,000 If I had a 1,000,000
If I had a 1,000,000 I’d be RICH!
LX013,
Half my relatives live in Switzerland, so I often find myself explaining to them obscure references to American culture. (Indeed, a lot of Americans miss one thing or another … no one can have seen every movie or heard every old joke.)
The word “onomatopoeia,” which I learned in English class as a child, is not only fun to say and to use, but it explains a great many of the words in English, like “skooch,” that may never become listed in any dictionary but which evoke their meaning by their sound (and context) alone.
I sometimes think onomatopoeia accounts for the majority of the words that require explanation to non-English-speakers!
I just told my granddaughter the other night when we saw the first star at night she’d get her wish to come true, just like in her nursery rhymes. She was ticked that it didn’t work immediately too. The sad part was that she wished for her great-grandmother to come back to her. I told her it took awhile for the wish to happen and that it had to be a wish that could actually come true. She then wished for her Mom to pick her up this morning to go back home, a certainty in her world.
I am also glad to see you back marg. I hope the pain diminishes soon, but I know that you have to go through the process, which takes time. Take care sweetie!
Speaking of Jiminy Cricket, I was talking on the phone with my grandmother last week or so, and she started talking about Pinocchio. I was very confused about some of the things she mentioned, and it took me a full five minutes to realize she was talking about the Disney version (which I have never seen) and not the original (which I have read at least four times).

However, that instant gratification very often ruins people. How many lottery winners got said instant gratification and are now completely “Skooshed”
