One of my not so clever ideas years ago was to sneak a superball onto the squash court with me. Part way during the game I switched the ball without my partner seeing and gave my serve an almighty whack! It sure as hell surprised my partner, but more so me, as that ball became a lethal projectile that never seemed to slow down and came from every direction. Floor, walls and ceiling only seemed to make it go faster!! Lying flat on the floor became the best option and eventually it stopped leaving us more than a little shaken. I was so grateful that all the strip lights remained intact otherwise my joke could have got me ejected from the club. I NEVER touched one of those balls again :-)

I think that’s the best story I’ve heard in a long time. You described it so vividly! I laughed so heard I almost fell out of my chair!
du55…No, strictly a Southern boy. I’ve heard of stickball, of course, but I didn’t know it was played with a tennis ball. I guess the game we played was an Eastern import.
Calvinball4ever, I laughed so hard! (while trying to be quiet so my wife wouldn’t say “What are you doing?”) Every time I envision it, I start laughing again.
Classic CandH stuff. I do a segment in my classes where I use Calvinball for a metaphor for the way institutions and individuals cahnges the rules as they go along. To reinterpret the rules as you go along is almost the same thing. Vik

Tennis balls are faster than baseballs. You learn something new each day.

How about an original Super Ball?
Hey! The Wham-O ball is still around! Who knew? http://www.superballs.com/

Maybe they should play Calvinball instead - then they can use any ball they like!
moronbis about 14 years ago
Hey!! Calvin is good at one sport.
Herocoder about 14 years ago
Well .. thats all the payback for Hobbes’ marking the bases so far apart previously .. :D
cdward about 14 years ago
sweetbill, when Calvin pitches, he uses a bowling ball and rolls it toward Hobbes. That’s the advantage of being the owner of the balls.
lewisbower about 14 years ago
No,say it isn’t so, Joe. Calvin beat Hobbes to home?
Sandfan about 14 years ago
We did this when I was a kid, but the bat was a broomstick.
Manitobaman about 14 years ago

Herocoder, you beat me to the punch.
But Calvin must be getting better all the same - it takes a lot to wind a tiger.

I wonder if the spammer ever gets business from these annoying ads, or if the purpose is to annoy. Flagged!

Consider what you could have done with a “Flubber Ball” (TM) DisneyCo, it would be going still.

Less distance with a tennis ball, I think. More with a golf ball.

What about half-rubber? Never got as much as a foul tip, but could throw reasonably well.
alan.gurka about 14 years ago
Stickball or stoopball were both played with any available ball, but usually a pink Spalding or Pennsy Pinkie ball.

I love it when Calvin and Hobbes get their revenge on each other during thier baseball games!

rumplesnitz about 14 years ago
Maybe y’all have a good “Mythbuster’s” project here - which gets more distance from a bat - a baseball, a tennis ball, or a golf ball… hmmm…
bmonk about 14 years ago
There’s also a Smithsonian exhibit I remember in which they try other materials for baseballs: clay and lead for sure. Maybe others?
Clay: ball shatters into smithereens and vanishes. Lead: ball breaks the bat off.
