I’d have a modicum more respect for Kanye if I thought he did have an opinion on Shakespeare vs. Marlowe.

    Great week, Pab!

Watch it, Kanye! Old Will is gonna stab you in the eye with a quill if you don’t shut up!

I’d rather listen to KJ-52 (or Dickens) any day. I like Shakespeare’s sonnets, but his plays are either depressing (like Titus Andronicus), or copies of something already in existence (Like Romeo and Juliet).

Librarianintraining, get thee to a library! Elizabethan playwrights freely borrowed characters, plots, and conventions from each another and from older sources; this was not considered a fault. It’s what Shakespeare did with his material, with unsurpassed artistry, and deep insight into the human condition, that we still celebrate and enjoy.

    kfaatz925, yeah, what you said.

kfaatz925, I think he’s referring to PHILIP Marlowe (Raymond Chandler’s character), not Christopher Marlowe.

Besides, Chris Marlowe is a red herring. We all know that Francis Bacon actually ghost-wrote all of Shakespeare’s stuff.

(don’t get all serious and pile on me, I’m joking here.)

As far as borrowing charcaters. plots, etc.; It’s nothing that Hollywood isn’t currently doing! Look at all the remakes, movies-of-cartoons, etc. that have come out in the last 20 or so years.

Mivins, yeah, I know. But I still find Pyramus et Thisbe more tragic and moving than Romeo and Juliet. Don’t ask why. I just do.

I was just emphasizing that I preferred Shakespeare’s poetry to his plays. That’s all.

And if you want a play that looks like a B Horror Flick, read Titus Andronicus considered by most critics to be Shakespeare’s worst.

I love the version of Pyramus and Thisby in Midsummer Night’s Dream!

Can’t bear Titus Andronicus; I’m with you there. And I can’t fault anyone who loves the sonnets. :)
