Miss O'Malley: Class, last year I noticed a problem, with the way Valentine's Day cards were being exchanged. It seems some of you were getting lots of cards while others were getting very few. I've decided that as fifth-graders, you're too young to have to deal with that sort of stress. So this year, I want you to bring enough cards for all of your classmates. That'll make things fair. Of course, this may introduce another sort of stress. Child 1: We have to give cards to girls?!? Child 2: We have to give cards to boys?!!?

I remember some Mad magazine valentine’s day cards I got my hands on as a kid. One of my favorites was “Roses are red, violets are black, you’d look better, with a knife in your back”. Ahh…sentiment. Fortunately, I have learned that one is after more than an initial jab. Freudian slip. A man is indeed after an intial jab.

Oh, the benefits of homeschooling! My boys have NEVER given a Valentine’s Day card/present to anyone. The trick will be when they get married to make sure they DO give something to their spouse on the appropriate holidays.

yeah… grade school crushes really were the hardest things. Trying to get mom to understand why we had to drive by that house down by the canal 5 times a day….She just didn’t get it. Then when I finally got my drivers license I could do my stalking.. er, romancing… alone without witnesses.. er, company…

It’s a good rule. If you remember your Peanuts strips, not getting Valentines is heartbreaking (for grownups, too).

Grade school Valentine’s are stupid. Classes give it to everybody, so there’s no true sentiment behind it. Except from your friends. And it’s just not the same when it’s a same gender friend, as it almost exlusively is at that age. it’s nice to read them until your old enough to realize they were forced to write it, so who cares? Then it was just a waste. Sure everybody got the same amount, but the same amount of forced sentiment isn’t a good thing.

yeah, but, mrprongs, for ugly unpopular kids like me, the equal distribution gave the illusion that people liked you and at least let you feel semi-included
