Is it possible that she has something she wants to talk about, but instead of just getting to it, she wants him to start a conversation so she can then sway it towards her topic; meanwhile, not only has he seen through that ruse, but he has already parsed all likely topics, and come to the conclusion that “nothing” good can come from any of them.
The downside of this idea is that it perpetuates a stereotype (not my intention!) but at least it doesn’t serve to make the man look like a no-brained dunderhead, something we see all-too-much these days and are expected to accept.

If she really thinks he’s empty-headed–i.e. stupid–why isn’t afraid to be in the car when he’s driving?
