Wasn’t there a PEANUTS comic with Charlie Brown as the officious crossing guard? I believe Lucy muttered “Pig!” as she went past him. It was the ’60s after all.
I remember waaaaaaaaaay back when – us 4th graders used to fight over the chance to be a crossing guard! It was a real honour then. Plus you got out of class at 2.30 instead of 3pm.

In the 50’s you could be in the ‘safety patrol’ in 5th grade and could ride in a car without seat belts or padded dash boards.
