Smoked from 14 – 39, quit! No real reason – thought 25 years was enough. Been 4 years – don’t miss it. However, picked up 20 kilos, sitting behind a desk… Ah! Well…
My parents smoked when they were young and quit when we came along, and during the time they were still together did not smoke in the house (though I suspect my dad smoked when he was away from home). Both took it up again when they divorced in 1971. Eventually my mother quit but my dad didn’t, and died of emphysema when he was 75.
Smoked from 16 to 44, but never more than 1 1/2 packs a day, and frequently less. Promised my (third) wife on Christmas Eve 1995, when I opened the carton I just bought, that I would quit when I finished the last pack in it. That was 7:30 AM on 1/11/1996. Haven’t had one since – but I gained 70 pounds, of which I’ve dropped 10.I’d rather DIE than break a promise to her. So far, I’m still alive.
I smoked a few cigarettes when I was a teen, couldn’t figure out what the fascination was after trying three or four. I decided it must be some mental defect in people that continue doing it and never took up one again.

I was somewhat fortunate. I was very unpopular and unliked in school, so looking “cool” wasn’t an issue. I have never taken a single puff.
