When I was in 3rd grade, I went to a brand new school. There were 2 other Karens in the class, so the teacher asked if any of us wanted to go by a nickname. I decided to go by Kitty. I was introduced by the teacher to all of the “specials” teachers as Kitty. By 6th grade the other 2 Karens were gone, but my gym teacher still called me Kitty. I just thought she liked it. One day she heard another student call me, and she stopped me: “Karen? Your name is Karen?”

I had a classmate who was called “Smith” but, when lined up alphabetically, explained the ‘P’ was silent in Psmythe.

My nickname came from a cousin who had a speech malfunction.
