Ordinary Basil. Basil's plunge into a mysterious crevasse filled with light brought about another stunning surprise. Instead of falling to his demise, Basil landed safely in a tree! For the moment, Louise put aside the puzzle of how a tree could grow underground and focused her attention on how to rescue Basil. First, she would need help. Louise summoned her mighty pet pteranodon, Beatrice, who obediently swooped down from her perch. "Hold still, Bea," Louise said calmly. She took the reins from Bea's harness and fastened them around her waist. Louise eased herself into the light-filled crevasse as Beatrice lowered her slowly. The reins were just long enough to reach Basil. "You could've just dropped the rope," Basil said, embarrassed that Louise had risked her own safety to rescue him. "I know," Louise replied, "but I wanted to do a little exploring." "What?" Basil shot back, still shaking from his fall. "Why do you want to do that?" Louise just smiled and said, "Turn around."
