lib·er·al    adj. 1. a. Not limited to or by established, traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes, views, or dogmas; free from bigotry. b. Favoring proposals for reform, open to new ideas for progress, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others; broad-minded.

Can you explain to me why you see anyone being called a “liberal” is bad thing?

liberal is not a definition but an idea, one with which some people are prone to have excess to(in case you don’t get it, that means you) !!

“liberal is not a definition but an idea…”

Since I just provided the dictionary definition for you, that proves you’re wrong. You are entitled to your own opinion, but you are not entitled to your own facts.

Actually, you provided the definition for a liberal, AZ was specifically referring to a “flaming left-wing liberal” which unfortunately is miles away from your idealistic defiinition. That being said, I don’t think Wiley or the strip are that far out in left field. I lean to the right and still enjoy them.

Wow AZPD – I bet you’re the same douchebag that thinks liberals are ‘happy’ when our soldiers die in Iraq because it helps prove W is an idiot. Or that we were sad when nobody died in hurricane Ike because we couldn’t slam Bush for it.

Really shows how pathetic of a human being you must be.

    Roberto Lopez wrote in part:

liberal is not a definition but an idea,

Then Wiley Miller replied in part:

Since I just provided the dictionary definition for you, that proves you’re wrong.

This is what philosophers call a ‘category error’. Liberalism is an idea (or more properly, an ideology, that is a coherent system of ideas about some domain, in this case politics), and Wiley gave a definition of that ideology (or more properly, of the adjective ‘liberal’ that describes a follower of that ideology).

(I have to write everything properly, or some other would-be philosopher will jump on me! ^_^ And I hope that I don't have to explain that ‘ideology’ is not a naughty word either.)

Without disagreeing with Wiley (in that being called a ‘liberal’ is not a bad thing), Roberto has a point: that whatever the definition of a word may be, the property that it describes could be taken to excess. (But I also agree with DigitalFrog that Wiley is hardly a liberal to excess, so I'm not sure where Roberto is going with his point.)

Full disclosure: I'm a flaming left-wing anarchist; I usually don't call myself ‘liberal’, since that's easily misunderstood and not as descriptive as other words, although I do fit the definition that Wiley gave.
