I got satellite TV and I wouldn’t give you a plugged nickle for it. Still, it’s better than without.

heh, haven’t had cable, or anything else for six years now. Good shows come out on dvd and are cheaper than the service, and I don’t have to put up with the stupid ads. Every year there were more and more ads. Pretty soon, mostly ads, about six minutes of show, per hour

given up satellite TV to spend more time with the kids - best thing ever. now read a lot more and only buy shows that I hear from friends is really great and then watch at my convenience on my notebook.

What the difference between satellite TV and cable TV? With satellie TV, all your local channels are in the right place. With cable TV, they’re switched around.

If they give you 24 minutes of program for 6 minutes of advertising, which minutes do you think they spend the talent on. I love ads

I’m on HD satellite and love it. My local channels are all in the right spot. We DVR anything we want to watch and skip through the ads.

We had cable 15 years ago but decided to save the money. We found we watched so little TV that when the switch to digital happened, we never bothered to get that box or a new TV. Haven’t noticed the difference. Life is more interesting.

I have neither and am very content.

I have less trouble on average with my satellite TV than my sister has with her cable. I loved it when I got it years ago, but the price has gone up a lot, and programming quality has gone down a lot since then. But once addicted, it’s hard to cut the cord…

I don’t watch much TV, broadcast or otherwise, but if I got rid of our cable, the women in the household would be so difficult to deal with I’d pay double to get it back I’m sure.

I STILL don’t get people who pay for TV. Seems illogical and unproductive in the extreme….

well the advantages of paying for tv is that when certain time slots come around and the broadcasters fill them with mindless drivel aimed at certain income/age groups, One can change the channel to a specialty channel to enjoy what one likes or tune the DVR for favorite stuff that has been recorded!

DistracTV? Well there’s your problem. Shoulda went with DashNetwork. Much better folks (and Murdoch used to have a stake in DistracTV, he may still).

Nice try Potzebie, But … you can DVR/VCR timeshift without paying for TV, and – get this – you can do something other than watch TV in your ”spare time’ too.

Your response still begs the question: why pay for TV when the public library has books and yes, even video recordings you can check out for free, or it you insist on paying for something, you can go to a live theatre and see a real show.

Is WM going to provide us with a ‘tale’ at the end about how this TV dependence has rotted Dinea’s brain, or is this just a comment on how society needs to be ‘entertained’ mindlessly? What ever happened to Dad’s cable news show anyway? …. Hey– inquiring minds want to know! :)

Keep that satellite out of commission for the next week and let’s see what happens to Danae.

Logicman, I can’t wait a few years for the library to obtain copies of Lost or Dr. Who.

Sure, I could go high tech and try to download them from the web, but that would imply a broadband connection. So that would mean that I have:?

a 56k modem? i remember having one of those not too long ago. it took what seemed to be forever to download a three-minute vid off youtube. with my current internet connection, though, downloading a complete episode of my favorie anime is a relative breeze at 10 minutes. oh, and as far as doctor who is concerned, i was able to download the trailer for the “water on mars” episode due to be out next month on the bbc. that is…for those in the uk. i’ll have to wait until syfy can show it. as for danae, i can just about commiserate…

ahh satellite TV - we had the premium package - got rid of it - now I sit in my office and surf the net reading comics on the web … wait - thats giving up one addiction for another - Doh!

In Australia we have legislation that mandates a certain amount of sport and premium shows must be made available to free-to-air-tv - this is coming up for review very soon - it will be interesting to see what pressure the Pay TV boys put on the politicians.

I got rid of the newspapers. Everything they wrote about, was yesterdays news; zero live coverage. Now I watch national news on cable, and the local news. The Daily Show, The Cobert Report,(Comedy Central in general.) and Red Eye, are only on cable (or Sat.) and are worth the cost alone. Of course, only on cable can I watch the Tigers play. The ball park is a hundred bucks each, if you add up all the costs… A TV is like a picture on the wall that moves. Turn the sound off, and enjoy it as a decoration.
