Ah, those long-ago days when everyone was making jokes about woman drivers. Today, of course, we’re more likely to hear jokes about Asian drivers (like in Scary Movie 3).
As late as the middle 50s - it was generally thought that women did NOT need to learn how to drive. I had an aunt who NEVER learned how to drive. Then, one day, when she was in her 60s, her husband had a heart attack while at home. Without thinking twice - and with no experience at driving and with no driver’s license, she put him in the car and drove him to the hospital. After that experience, my uncle enrolled her in a driving school and she took driving lessons - then took - and passed - her first driving test. Now she has a license. As recently as the 30s, a majority of people believed that girls did not need an education beyond the 8th grade.
I am guessing from Mrs. Mutt’s clothes that this strip originally appeared around the mid-50s. Which was about the time that public opinion began to shift and people were becoming more accepting of the idea that women SHOULD be learning how to drive a car.
