Are Americans seriously that ignorant of history? For about 90 years, from 1870 – 1960, African Americans voted almost exclusively Republican. That was, after all, the party of Lincoln. After LBJ took up the civil rights cause that had been going on independently of political party, the vast majority switched parties because the result was the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which passed almost exclusively by the Democratic Party. It wasn’t until then that racial discrimination was a crime. The vast majority of all people of all races prefer to support themselves. No one wants to be turned away from a job because of their race. Most African Americans now vote Democratic because this was the party that made it illegal to be discriminated against, and gave legal recourse against those who try it.
