Considering that the old five-and-dime stores of my childhood have been replaced by dollar stores, this joke is quite possible.
Many countries around the world have inflated coins into non-existance. For example, it used to be 100 centissimos to the Italian lira and 100 sen to the Japanese yen. Many Germans don’t even know there ever was a 1 pfennig coin. As a coin collector, I’ve seen it happen to country after country.
So don’t be surprised if the U.S. finally succeeds in replacing dollar bills with coins (like Canada has) and stops minting pennies altogether (perhaps after changing to aluminum first).
Two economic insights to remember: Inflation is not a rise in prices but rather a rise in the money supply beyond the supply of goods and services (the rise in prices is an effect, not a cause); and only the government can inflate the money supply.

If inflation was any higher, we could save energy by using dollar bills to fly!
