I wish those deer could read, there’s nothing more frightening than have a deer bash into the side of your car. They come out of the dark so fast and run right into your truck or car. Whew!
Yes, crunkbot, we wouldn’t want them to die before we get a chance to kill them.
It would be better for the populations of game animals simply to let their natural predators back into the environment. Natural predators cull the weak and sick from the herds; trophy hunters go for the biggest, strongest head for their wall.
fritzoid- I live in a state (pretty obvious with my screen name) that has wolves. I no longer hunt, but I did enjoy wild game. I also agree to putting them back, but you need to consider, the range for wolves in N.A. also includes Central Park in New York, as well as deep in the south. If we re-introduce wolves to their native habitats, you bleeep will better start by putting them back all over, not just in places you don’t live. Just because there aren’t many people out here in these lands doesn’t mean that the wolves get free run. It’s too easy for them to attack the ranchers’ livestock…those deer and elk are quick, and cattle and sheep pretty much just plod around….
Unlike coyotes, which can thrive in populated areas, wolves don’t gravitate much to cities (it’s not unknown, but it’s far rarer). A certain amount of livestock depradation is unavoidable, I’m afraid. It’s the cost of being in that business.
100 years ago, the vision of the Dept. of the Interior was to completely eradicate “varmints” from coast to coast, and they did a pretty good job of it (with the exception of the coyotes, but that’s a different subject). The result has been a complete upheaval of the balance of predator/prey, resulting in over-foraging by the “good” wildlife such as deer and rabbits (and mice, and certain birds, and…).
We’ve got two choices: either get rid of EVERYTHING that isn’t controllable and profitable, turning all of our wilderness resources into fauna-less, forested “parks”, or reconcile ourselves to the idea that we aren’t the only species that has a right to live in all this land.
(Besides, pretty much the only way of controlling coyote populations that’s proven effective is to have a viable wolf population. A small population of wolves will keep a vast amount of acreage coyote-free.)
Ah suppose, chol, ah say ah suppose, if folks like Joe and me can jes’ remember th’ differ’nce between bein’ in-for-mah-tive and bein’ pedantic, then the res’ of y’all can go to sleep ev’ry night happy. :)

Note that the deer was not hit.

Maybe not but I almost hit one with my car tonight on the way home from work. I could have saved Thor some trouble.
Rakkav about 15 years ago
Who puts up these road signs, anyway? :))
MisngNOLA about 15 years ago
Not hitting the deer on the sign may be a good thing as every deer I’ve ever hunted moved much faster than than sign moves.
lazygrazer about 15 years ago
The deer put up those signs….then cross the road elsewhere to throw the roadside hunters off.

Why do idiots have to shoot those signs?

If that is true, then why are people starving to death every day?
