I think turtles can supplement their diets with animal protein such as bugs, worms, and so on. When I was a kid, we would feed our turtles bits of raw hamburger, and they’d eat them willingly enough.
Then again, none of those dime-store turtles lived more than a couple of weeks anyway, so who can say…
