Actually, Joe, you have your birds confused. This is a dookey bird. The apteryx (a wingless bird with hairy feathers) looks different and can’t fly. This bird CAN fly and has done so on numerous occasions (he even dropped a grape from altitude into John’s mouth once).
So why does he migrate south on the back of a tortoise? I assume it’s because he can’t fly very FAR…

Johanan Rakkav I have read this strip almost since inception. Why would this bird introduce himself as an apteryx (numerous times) if he wasn’t one?
As for the bird’s ability to fly, he CAN because this is a comic strip.
