You can’t tell from the comic whether Burl or Joy know the difference between yams and sweet potatoes. What I think you can tell is that Julie Larson believes they’re the same.

Yams are sweet potatoes, but not all sweet potatoes are yams. It is a variety name, or a family variety name.
