I remember an earlier version by Chas Addams (the cartoonist who came up with the Addams Family characters) with a guy on skis–apparently from the Jan 14, 1935 issue of The New Yorker?–as here:
R_ Noonan, The first I remember it was in a Bob Hope-Bing Crosby movie in the 40’s I believe with Bob on skis and the result being the same as depicted above. I remember lying on the floor of the theater laughing. -Not close to a teenager yet.

I agree. Thaves does a great job. I thought a good joke was about timing. However, this proves that it is all about pacing.
