They can be addictive. At least until you start drowning in the pathos.

Oh, the name of the soap opera she watches is called “Sudden Illness”. For a moment, I thought she was talking about withdrawal symptoms.

I used to watch the soaps many years ago. I gave up when I finally realized that there would never be a “happily ever after”.

Sure glad I never developed an interest in that kind of slop! Guess it’s because my parents introduced me to reading books, good books, at an early age. The so-called actors and actresses and the writers of soap slop would not know how to really act without their four-letter words and Hollywood sex scenes!!! What a waste of time and intelligence! Keep on walking, Elly!!!!

I thought she was talking about a childhood disease I hadn’t heard of. Instead she’s talking about an adult malady. I never like soap operas and now I don’t even have TV.

I gave up on soaps the time I saw a guy get shot with a shotgun on one of them, and the time between when the trigger was pulled and when he fell over was around three weeks.

Stopped watching soaps about 20 years ago. Happened to turn one on a few days ago and after a couple of minutes realized that the the same people were doing and saying the same things. They were just 20 years older:D

I used to watch a soap faithfully until one day I realized that none of the characters I saw that day were behaving like a normal human being. I wanted to yell “Just get ON with it!”. Instead, I quit watching. It’s been more than 20 years.

Joy SOAP was really just a parody of soaps and it was hilarious (gave Billy Crystal his start)! Dark Shadows had everyone watching because it had werewolves and vampires & oh my!

You can miss a soap for a few days and not miss much. 75% is recap and 25% is new… which you can catch up on tomorrows 75%

To be fair, though, soap opera actors are probably the hardest working actors out there. If they’re in a major story arc, they work five days a week, and have to memorize their lines the day of shooting. They have to be ready to go through any range of emotions the day of. It’s not like a sitcom or a normal show, where they take a week to produce one episode. They don’t get to rehearse at work for a day or two and have the luxury of working on their lines at home.

Well, I consider myself intelligent, I have a life, a job, plenty of outside activites, but if they ever cancel “Days of Our Lives”, I’ll be in front of the NBC studios with the biggest picket sign you ever saw! I’ve watched it since the day it came on the air when I was a kid.

And for the record, some of todays biggest stars came from soaps, Demi Moore, Morgan Freeman, Alec Baldwin (can’t stand him), Rick Springfield, etc.

“Where else can you see every immorality known to man done by everybody, to each other, every day, all within an hour? You know, what a deal…” – Carman Licciardello

And I don’t see why anyone would think that the actors work hard if they very much rehash everything every day and every week.

Joy618. LOL! I thought of those two show from back in the dark ages. I loved “Dark Shadows” and watched it when I got home from school every day. They called it a soap, but I liked to think of it as a serial. Soap, was hilarious. It was kind of a parody of Soaps. Billy Crystal was great.

I’m gonna post this tomorrow since no one will see it, too late at night. I also watched Dark Shadows as a kid and got rehooked on it again when they showed the reruns starting in 1996. There are a lot of people still hooked on it through the dvd’s (what other “soap” has been released in it’s entirety on DVD?) I own a yahoo group called Dark Shadows Forever.

Sorry Macushlalondra but on the west coast we are still up and running. I also loved Dark Shadows. Also The Young and the Restless and General Hospital. After my Mom died it was no longer any fun to watch and laugh at what was going on. If you stop and think about it all series on TV are “soaps”.
