The spelling is fine in that context. We just don’t know if he’s crying or thinking of the person who was piloting the ship.
My mind didn’t see “SOB” like cry. I read it as: S(on) O(f) a B(*#@^). Which may be a contextually appropriate response to their situation.
Especially in a situation like this!

Well, he can always erase and put in that second “S” (the second guy, I mean).
